When will you retire?

By Gerry Baker (pictured).

The subject of retirement ages will be one of the main talking points in the upcoming general election.

The Government has already put in place legislation that will increase the State Pension Age for women from 60 to 65 by 06 April 2020 and for both men and women from 65 to 68 in stages between 2024 and 2046.

A recent Government-commissioned report, entitled Fair Society, Healthy Lives, indicates that based on the current and predicted state of the nation's health a retirement age increase to 68 is not viable.

The Conservative Party has put forward proposals to raise the State Pension Age more quickly than the current Government. They propose to start increasing the age at which State Pension can be claimed to 66 by 06 april 2016.

In Spain, trade unions are demonstrating against Government proposals to raise the State Pension Age from 65 to 67.

There is likely to be widespread debate about when we will be able to afford to retire over the next few years. Having in place sufficient private pension provision will become increasingly important.
